These images were taken from Artbook #5, the very last page, where Naoko does her "thank you's" to the fans for purchasing the book. Aside from this, if you go to The Oracle, the translations of one of the paintings states that Naoko had intended for a picture of Eternal Sailor Moon and Sailor Cosmos to be layered, one over the other, but the picture of Cosmos didn't show up properly.

On top of all that, the translation of the last few pages from the Final Arc, where Cosmos is talking to the Sailor Quartet is taken a bit too literally.

"Sailor Cosmos!?" says Ceres. "It can't be... It can't be... Are you the future... The future Sailor Moon's ultimate form!?"

"I am only a coward," the woman says. "I abandoned everything, and ran away from where I should have been. Eternally, I am no match for the final courage and strength of Eternal Sailor Moon."

"Final courage!? Then, is Sailor Moon-!? She can't be..."

"Sailor Cosmos! Our princess...!"

She never says that she is NOT Sailor Moon, or one of her forms, she simply states that in this current form, that she is no where near the level of strength of Eternal Sailor Moon, which doesn't necessarily imply that she is not her from the future.

She later goes on to say, regarding her appearance as Chibi-Chibi:

"The me of here, too, was all alone. Always suffering. So I was always by her side, to support her. I was going to make her choose the right path this time.... But I knew. The chosen path was not a mistake. Nobody can destroy the place where stars are born. Because of this place, we can continue living. Time and time again, we can start over. I won't run away anymore. I'll go ahead to the future. Because I was blessed with great power by Eternal Sailor Moon. All the courage and strength to stand alone, the courage and strength to accept everything! I had forgotten it. The matchless strength!"

She is saying here that she cannot be the person she was before, in terms of courage, strength and bravery.
They are the same person, but Sailor Cosmos cannot be the same as she was before because of the effects of the war with Sailor Chaos. She doesn't have the same level of sacrifice in her that her former self did, and she had come back from the future to destroy The Galaxy Cauldron so that her terrible future would never happen.

So, what it comes down to, is that Sailor Cosmos is referring to the emotional strength that Eternal Sailor Moon has, the ability to sacrifice everything to save her friends and her future, where Cosmos does not possess that level of maturity from the future and chooses to come back to destroy in the past what will ruin her future.

My mind could never really wrap around the true definition or purpose of SailorCosmos...
I always assumed she was either a. a higher enlightened form (like energy?) of Usagi in the future.. like- a transcendance of physical to something more or b. some raw form of Usagi's power... that looks exactly like her?

I'm surprised Naoko never explains her purpose... I think SailorCosmos is kind of the drawing line where the series kinda goes BEYOND wtf

The funny thing is, the japanese never really seem to give a solid answer to a lot of stories/movies. And I wasn't the one who noticed this, it was my Kendo Sensei that told us.

I had seen Zatoichi and had been completely confused by the ending. When I brought it up during a Kendo get together, Sensei informed me that almost all TV, Movie and books written are like that. He found that whenever he went to see a movie with his wife, and he couldn't figure out the ending, she almost never could either and was just fine with that. He said he thinks it has something to do with the producers and directors wanting to give you something to think about, maybe even to build your own ending.

Part of me thinks that Naoko tried to do that here as well, seeing as there isn't a concrete timeline in the story for anything past Usagi and Mamoru's wedding. For example, we see the construction of Crystal Tokyo taking place in the last Arc, but she allegedly was not made Queen until some 2000 years later. Why would you build a palace that you couldn't use for 2 milennia? Imagine the dust!

On top of that, if she hadn't yet awakened the world from the sleep that they had been put in, how did anyone know that she was going to be Queen 2000 years in the future? Divine Inspiriation? Or were they just building a huge glass office tower when everyone went to sleep for a few thousand years?

I dunno. @_@

I always thought of her as an alternate universe (or alternate future, if you will) version of Sailor Moon. I would elaborate on that and go into theories, but I'm at work on break and my brain is fried, lol.
26th-Jan-2007 07:05 pm (UTC)
Yeah, ditto, I figured maybe she was an alternate version.. where something happened and cosmos lost the will to be strong and survive.. to fight for their future and all that.
26th-Jan-2007 07:06 pm (UTC)
In the manga it said that SailorCosmos is chibi chibis true form so I dont know

LUNA! *_* we will have a long convo tonight in which i shall explain this to you XD ..because..,your dumb. ♥

Okay. So, Eternal Sailor Moon is Cosmos' ultimate form, because of the whole 'ability to lose and gain everything' thing, and Cosmos realizes this AFTER going back as Chibichibi. Do I have that right?
26th-Jan-2007 08:54 pm (UTC)

Sailor Cosmos IS Usagi/Sailor Moon's ultimate form, but the reason why she says that Eternal Sailor Moon has more power than she does, is because in the final act of the manga, Eternal Sailor Moon throws herself into the Galaxy Cauldron in order to max out her Silver Crystal Power, destroy Chaos, and it resets the cauldron all at the same time. Now, because Eternal Sailor Moon did this, and it had been ChibiChibi/Cosmos' intention to just destroy the cauldron so that Sailor Chaos could never be released again to cause wars and destruction, Cosmos felt that Eternal Sailor Moon was her "Ultimate" form because she had the courage to do this. Cosmos herself in her time felt that the sacrifice would have been too great to destroy Sailor Chaos in the future war, so instead of making the sacrifice that her past self would have (and did) make, she ran from the battle instead.

I think what happened was people took Sailor Cosmos' quote a bit too literally, and thought that she was stating backwardly that she wasn't Sailor Moon's ultimate form, when really she was stating that she didn't have the strength to do what her past self did so many years ago in the future.

Good point.

"The me of here, too, was all alone. Always suffering. So I was always by her side, to support her.

So, does that mean that Cosmos was by Chibi-Chibi's side always? It sounds a bit more like she's referring to Usagi, especially since there's a picture with that quote of Usagi and Chibi-Chibi hugging.

It's nice to finally see something that's at least somewhat definitive instead of taking a random survey of people's opinions.

I think maybe Naoko just likes to F*** with our brains and will never actually say what she intended.
26th-Jan-2007 09:28 pm (UTC)
Oh probably not.

If I were her, I'd have the answer engraved on my headstone or something.
26th-Jan-2007 09:48 pm (UTC)
I always figured her timeline of aliases was this:

Princess Serenity -> Usagi -> Sailor Moon -> Super Sailor Moon -> Eternal Sailor Moon -> Neo Queen Serenity -> Sailor Cosmos

In my mind, after being Queen she gain enough power so that Chibi Usa took over as Queen and/or the Sailor Moon of our solar system, and Usagi took on the more ultimate form of Sailor Cosmos, defending the whole galaxy/universe. But otherwise, I pretty much agree with your above statements.
26th-Jan-2007 09:58 pm (UTC)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when you finish Cosmos, lets give a little class with pictures, explaining this........ WHO IS WHO WAIT WUUUT?

27th-Jan-2007 12:26 am (UTC)
I figured that Neo Queen Serenity was a human form, and if she needed senshi form it would be Cosmos, but there was never doubt that Cosmos was Usagi, ultimately. And since ChibiChibi was Cosmos in disguise, then ChibiChibi is Usagi as well.

Now in the anime, who the balls even knows?
27th-Jan-2007 11:04 pm (UTC)
the anime likes to fuck with us.

In my mind, Cosmos is a form of Moon. If she is from an alternate reality (maybe from Kousagi's timeline??) or a "future" self is debateable. Either way the ultimate form of Sailor Moon of "now" (the Usagi of the story) is Eternal Sailor Moon.

Whew! That's a lot to think about.o_O

Unrelated to this topic: If star seeds are reborn, did Queen Serenity get reborn? Who did she get reborn as? Chibiusa? Did she have a starseed? Am I the only one that's thought of this? I guess that's a mystery too.

27th-Jan-2007 06:50 am (UTC)
... Queen Serenity reborn as Chibiusa. That's ... disturbing. XD But amusing in some twisted way.
27th-Jan-2007 01:49 am (UTC)
It is MY PERSONAL OPINION that Sailor Cosmos and Sailor Moon are NOT the same person. I believe that Sailor Cosmos is a descended of Neo-Queen Serenity and Princess Lady Serenity (Chibi-Usa). Where along the line, I don't know. It has always been my belief that Sailor Cosmos is a future queen of Crystal Tokyo.

AGAIN...my personal opinion and belief.
28th-Jan-2007 06:51 am (UTC)
I feel the same.
27th-Jan-2007 04:48 pm (UTC)
all this is f-ed up! XD man...someone on a debate team in school should bring this up and deba-...NO! lets bring this into a SM panel at a con!!!!!! maybe it will get to a point of views clashing that a chair will be thrown!! XD

it kinda throws me off when in the manga it says that eternal sailor mon possesses the next greatest power...with the greatest power belonging to queen serenity...

but the whole becomming sailor cosmos to protect the whole UNIVERSE after chibi-usa becomes queen...makes sense...i mean..Chibi-usa can only do so much..and i mean, it is kind of hard to fight at the edge of the universe with some gelatinous blob while at the same time hordes of mini evil nano bots are chewing away at crystal tokyo...

i guess the only way to put a cap on this topic is to talk to takeuchi herself. Even then...maybe even SHE doesn't have a definitive answer. that would make me lol.
27th-Jan-2007 10:50 pm (UTC)
I guess its like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop: The world may never know. ^_^0
28th-Jan-2007 03:52 am (UTC)
exactaly! even creator herself.

I say we tie her up and force her to make an answer to put closure on this...but then...where would the fun be in debating it.

maybe she had this in mind in the FIRST place!!! she WANTED something like this to be debated for. hmm....
28th-Jan-2007 06:53 am (UTC)
Sailor Cosmos discussions always make my brain hurt. ;_;

Over the years I've had 934706347603476034976043976043976 people explain it to me, and I've come up with my own beliefs about it on my own, but no matter what I'm still confused about everything about her and Chibi Chibi and all that shit.

I realize that I don't make any more sense right here. XD
